Building Trust & Integrity

Strong trust and integrity within a team create a powerful foundation that positively influences financial performance, productivity, and employee engagement. The financial impact shows up in reduced turnover, fewer compliance issues, and increased innovation and healthy risk-taking.  Strong trust and integrity also impact productivity by fostering better collaboration, reducing conflicts and distractions (and who wouldn’t be thrilled with less distractions), and creating higher levels of follow-through on commitments.  Employees are more engaged because they experience psychological safety, stronger loyalty leading to higher morale, and more connection to the purpose and mission of the organization.

Here are 6 strategies for building trust and integrity within your team:

1. Model It at the Top

  • Start with senior leaders visibly modeling transparency, honesty, and consistency.
  • Teach managers to reflect on their values and lead by example.

2. Develop Emotional Intelligence

  • Empathy, self-awareness, and effective communication are crucial for building trust.
  • Offer development programs that strengthen emotional intelligence and active listening skills.

3. Create Feedback-Rich Cultures

  • Teach managers how to give and receive feedback constructively and regularly.
  • Make feedback part of team norms, not just annual reviews.

4. Coach on Transparency and Consistency

  • Help managers communicate openly, especially during uncertainty or change.
  • Encourage consistency between words and actions to build credibility.

5. Reward Integrity and Trust-Building Behaviors

  • Integrate these qualities into performance reviews, promotions, and recognition programs.
  • Celebrate when managers demonstrate courage, admit mistakes, or prioritize team wellbeing over personal gain.

6. Support Ethical Decision-Making

  • Use real-world case studies to train managers in handling ethical dilemmas.
  • Provide frameworks for decision-making that balance results with values.
